Windows: Open a new world
Are you looking out or in?
Ferney-Voltaire, France. The crocheted tablecloth caught my eye and conjured visions of tea parties long past.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The lady looks quiet but she must be hard at work. Spring is close. She opens the window to rid the old and let in the new.
Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Looking for coffee and a refuge from the rainy day, I saw the lamp shade and his wine. The man, silent and content, ignored the world outside.
Reykjavik, Iceland. Shop window details draw me in. The reflections here add to the cool summer wear on display.
New York, New York. Finally breaking through the taxi’s plexiglass barrier and windshield, I find the welcoming skyline. I leave the airport behind. I am home again.
Reykjavik, Iceland. The looming interior of the Harpa Concert Hall overwhelms at first. Changing colors in the geometric shaped glass panels beckon you in.
Seville, Spain. It was April. The annual feria would soon draw thousands. I imagine the men in their traditional sombreros de ala ancha.
Badlands, South Dakota. Traffic jams elsewhere take on a very different shape. Approaching the National Park, I stopped to let the Black Angus pass by.
Stromness, Scotland. The streets in this small town in the Orkneys are narrow. I imagine sitting inside, next to the window with a good book and listening to the crackling warmth of a fire.
Gstaad, Switzerland. During the annual Désalpe, herdsman lead their flower-adorned cattle down from the Alpine pastures. This little mouse drew my attention away from the parade.
St Margaret’s Hope, Scotland. From the bus’s front row seat, I see the car approach. On the wrong side? The driver steadily carries on.
Bilbao, Spain. Titanium roofs and vaulting glass spaces, the Guggenheim Museum pulls me in. The city is yet another piece in the museum’s arresting collection.
West Park, New York. The view from Holy Cross Monastery brings warmth despite the winter outside. I find peace and joy here, a thin space next to the Hudson River.
John O’Groats, Scotland. At the northeastern tip of Great Britain, spectacular views abound. My window frames the Orkneys. I boarded the ferry to the archipelago the next day.
Olivares, Spain. There is something special about cooking for your family while gazing at fields, bordered by olive and orange groves.
Fairfield, CT. At home, with embracing greenery. It feels like a tree house!
Salamanca, Spain. The Casa Lis holds lush Art Deco and Art Nouveau decorative pieces. With its many shades of green, this gallery guarantees splendid views of the south of the city.
Santiago de Compostela, Spain. From inside the Cathedral museum, tranquil colors reveal the buildings’ history.
Hoy to Stromness, Scotland. The horizon from the ferry window is a priceless gift. I had to bring its singular beauty back home.
